Biggest Loser Final Four

April 29, 2009 · Filed Under Episode Recaps · 4 Comments

Hi Everybody,
Biggest Loser begins with Mike and Ron talking (gloating?) about their positions on the ranch. Remember saying “Two against one..you lose”? Bob is bummed that Kristin is gone home.

The contestants take a trip down memory lane to their first days in the gym. Allison surprises the contestants and tells them that this is their last week on campus. After this week they will be going home. Everyone is a bit afraid.

How much the contestants have changed seems to be the theme of the night. The trainers have them do exercises that they did during their first week to compare their fitness. Helen, Tara and Mike fit into their “goal clothes”. They meet with the Doctor and he shows them how healthier they are now.

This weeks’ challenge is a tough one. Each contestant has to carry their weight through 16 hills (representing each week on campus) in a sand quarry. At each hill, they are able to drop the weight they lost during that week. The winner has the choice between $10,000 and a 1-pound advantage at the weigh-in. However, there’s a slight twist. Second place gets whatever prize first place does not take. This pretty much assures that the first place winner will take the 1 pound advantage because they won’t want to give an advantage to a competitor.

Mike and Filipe start out very strong. Tara is struggling along with Helen. Ron is last as usual. As Tara drops some of the weight she begins to catch up and soon passes Filipe (again?). Now she’s running through the quarry and once again she wins the challenge. Mike comes in second. It’s surprising to me that a boy that young can’t beat Tara in a competition. Mike goes back to help his dad. He’s such a great kid. Filipe sees them and also goes to help. Ron is one lucky dad.

At the weigh-in, Tara takes the 1-pound advantage. Mike gets $10,000. First to weigh-in this week is Ron. He lost 9 pounds this week. The amazing thing is Ron still weights 289 pounds after losing all that weight (141 pounds). Wow. Filipe lost 10 pounds this week. He’s lost 130 pounds since coming to Biggest Loser. Helen lost 7 pounds this week. She’s lost 103 pounds so far. Mike needs to lose more than 9 pounds to secure his place in the final four. He does it losing 11 pounds! Thank goodness because I love this kid. Tara lost 8 pounds this week, plus the 1 pound advantage keeps her above the yellow line. She’s lost 125 pounds so far. This puts Ron and Filipe below the yellow line.

At the eliminations, Mike, of course votes to eliminate Filipe. Helen is next and she votes to eliminate Filipe. She feels he is the bigger threat. I think she’s wrong because Ron has Mike’s back. He is eliminated and his speech is inspiring and brings tears to everyone.

Then Allison tells the remaining four that they will spend the next 30 days at home. They are on their own now!

So what happened to the segment where the contestants train their trainers? I have no idea! Probably didn’t make for good TV. Have a great week all! Stay tuned…Bloggergal1

This Week on Biggest Loser

April 26, 2009 · Filed Under Episode Recaps · 2 Comments

Hi Everybody,

We are getting closer and closer to the finale of Biggest Loser. This week the tables are turned and the contestants get to train their trainer. That might be fun but it won’t help the contestants lose more weight will it? The producers have a tendency to undermine the contestants’ progress.

Also, did Allison seal Mike’s fate at the end of last week’s episode when she commented that he was going to win? I’m sure it didn’t help him any that he agreed with her. Tara and Filipe practically had whiplash turning towards him when he said that. He better not fall below the yellow line this week!

Stay tuned…Bloggergal1

Who Gets to Hang Around a Week More on the Biggest Loser Ranch?

April 22, 2009 · Filed Under Episode Recaps · Comment

Hi Everyone,
Last night’s Biggest Loser began with Tara all upset because Jillian told Mike to vote Laura off. Jillian goes ballistic on her and tells her she’s selfish wanting to keep Laura there when she so clearly needs to be home to heal. Of course at the end of the conversation, they are hugging.

The luxury competition is a food and fitness quiz. There are four questions. The person who gets the most correct will win a 3-day all expense paid trip to NYC to visit Good Housekeeping Institute and lunch in the executive dining room. The first question is:

According to the packaging, how many servings in a 7 1/2 inch frozen pizza? The answer is 8 servings. The manufacturer does this to make the nutrition information look acceptable. In actuality the calorie count on this pizza is HIGH. None of the players get this question correct.

The second question: Which fat is the heart healthiest? Olive oil is the heart healthiest choice. Everyone gets it right except for Ron.

Question three: Which ground meat has the least amount of fat? Ground turkey breast. Notice that the answer is ground turkey breast. Ground turkey actually has quite a bit of fat in it. Ron, Mike and Kristin get it right. Kristin and Mike have 2 points each.

Last question: How many extra steps do people take who wear a pedometer? The answer is an extra 2000 steps. Ron, Helen, Mike and Kristin get this one correct. Mike and Kristin are tied.

We go to a tie-breaker. How many calories in a fried fast food fish sandwich with tartar sauce? Mike guesses 635 and Kristin guesses 435. Kristin thinks Mike is way too high but I actually thought Mike was going to be low. The answer is 640 calories. Mike was only off by 5 calories and so he wins the trip to NYC. I’m really happy for him because if you remember way back when he gave his free food for the year away. Don’t forget…What goes around comes around!

When Bob’s team explains about the nutrition quiz, Bob is concerned that they didn’t do better. He gives them a video camera to film an entire day of eating. When he sits down later on in the show to watch the tape, he’s not happy. Are they eating too many calories? Nope–too little. Probably they are doing this because of the tape but Bob tells them they need to eat enough because they are training so hard. Also their breakdown of protein, carbs, etc. is not correct. I think this is a really difficult area. It’s too bad we can’t all have our own nutritionist standing next to us when we are making our choices, isn’t it?

Let’s move on to tonight’s challenge. Each contestant will be in a cage 45 feet above the ground. Each cage has a rope attached to one end and they must hold on to the rope. If they let go of the rope, the cage falls. You need a ton of upper body strength plus no fear of heights to beat this one. The winner wins $10,000 OR a one pound advantage at the weigh-in. Mike is the first to let go of his rope. He is terrified of heights and doesn’t even try. Kristin was scared but concentrating. Filipe starts fooling around trying to get the others to lose their concentration. Tara and Filipe are exchanging barbs. Helen is annoyed that Filipe is being such a jerk. Ron’s rope slips and he’s out of the competition. Filipe is hunched over and straining. He can’t hold on anymore. Left are the three women. Tara looks strong as can be. Kristin slips. It’s down to Tara and Helen. They are now hanging on for over an hour. Tara is just standing there waiting for Helen to fall. Helen is struggling but Tara doesn’t even look like she’s sweating. Inevitably, Tara wins another one. She will say at the weigh-in whether she wants the one pound advantage or the $10,000. Hmm, I wonder what she’ll choose?

As usual, I fast forward through the last chance workouts. But I stop when I see Mike crying. He sits down to talk to his father about his weight issues. He’s upset that Ron let him and Max get really heavy just like him. I think this is a big milestone for Mike.

Time for the weigh-ins. In a very surprising decision, Tara takes the $10,000. Holy cow, she’s taking a chance this time. She’s betting on herself that she lost enough weight on her own. She lost 5 pounds this week. Did she make the right decision? Next up is Ron. He’s had some good losses in the past few weeks, can he keep it up? He lost 4 pounds this week. This puts him below 300 pounds. Helen only loses 1 pound this week. She’s devastated. This keeps Tara safe so she made a good bet and won $10,000. Mike lost 8 pounds. This keeps him safe for another week. Filipe lost 3 pounds this week. It’s not enough to keep him safe. But it saves Ron from elimination. Last to weigh-in tonight is Krisitn. She has to lose more than 2 pounds to stay safe. She gains 1 pound. Everyone is shocked, especially Bob. This means that either Helen or Kristin will be going home.

Tara is the first to reveal her vote for elimination. Tara votes against Kristin because she feels Helen is supporting her. Of course it doesn’t hurt her in the competition to get rid of Kristin. Filipe votes against Helen because he and Kristin are very close. Next up is Ron. He votes to eliminate Helen. He tells Helen that he promised Kristin’s mother he would take care of her. Mike votes to eliminate Kristin. This makes it a tie and the person with the lowest weight loss is eliminated. Kristin says goodbye today. Kristin is annoyed that Mike thought only of himself and eliminated her. It’s ridiculous for her to think like this. The whole point of the game, it is a game you know…is to WIN. Why wouldn’t he do what is right for him? Good for you Mike!

I loved Kristin but let’s face it she gained a pound this week and that sealed her fate. See you all next week…Bloggergal1

Biggest Loser Recap–Better Late Than Never?

April 20, 2009 · Filed Under Episode Recaps · Comment

Hi Everybody,
Sorry I missed the Biggest Loser recap earlier this week, I took my son to Colorado to look at colleges. Since I blog American Idol also, I couldn’t get both blogs done while away from home. Anyway, I did tape it so I’ll just give you a quick recap now.

After Filipe cried over loosing Sione, the contestants took part in a competition for a $25,000 kitchen makeover. They had to traverse a canyon while attached to ropes. This is something I could never do, I am SO afraid of heights. Ron quit after a minute or so saying his knee . Not surprisingly, Kara and Filipe were fighting it out for first place. Also not surprisingly, but very annoying and predictable, Kara wins.

This is makeover week so all the contestants get new clothes and looks. Then they attend a “movie premier” and one of their family members gets to join them. Actually, the movie premier is a review of their journies on Biggest Loser. As usual, everyone is very teary eyed (yes–me too). The most emotional part is when Mike talks to his brother Max about how he can lose the weight too and that he along with his dad will help him. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Max on the next Biggest Loser episode, would you?

Laura goes to see Dr. I because she’s having trouble with her hip. He tells her she has a stress fracture. She can no longer do calorie-burning exercises. It’s looking pretty bad for her staying on campus.

On to the weigh-ins. Mike is first up. He is five pounds away from breaking the most weight loss record. He lost 5 pounds and broke the all time record. The new record is 145 pounds in fifteen weeks–woohoo! Ron lost 6 pounds this week. He’s been doing a lot better with his weight loss. Tara lost 4 pounds. Filipe lost 5 pounds. Helen lost 7 pounds. Amazing! Kristin lost 2 pounds. She’s going below the yellow line. Laura gained 3 pounds. Not surprising after her devastating news. She is the second one below the yellow line.

Tara is first to vote. She votes against Kristin because Laura is her partner. Ron votes against Laura. Mike votes against Laura. She needs one more vote to be eliminated. Helen votes against Kristin. I think she did this because she knows that Kristin has a better chance of winning. The votes are 2 to 2. Filipe has the deciding vote and he votes Laura off the ranch. This makes sense. She needs to go home and recover. Biggest Loser is giving her doctor care to recover.

Biggest Loser’s Contestants Try To Eat Their Way to A Golden Ticket?

April 8, 2009 · Filed Under Episode Recaps, The Biggest Loser · Comment

Hi,
This show starts with the new conflict developing between Mike/Ron and Filipe/Sione. Sides are developing and I say it’s about time! This season’s Biggest Loser has just been filled with too much sugar!

Allison explains this week’s Temptation Challenge. There are 100 covered trays. Most of the trays hold fattening treats. But some treats hold Extra gum and cash tickets. One tray holds a Golden Ticket. The player that finds this holds the sole vote at elimination tonight. The players have to pick a tray and if there is an unhealthy snack underneath, they must eat it. Ron finds Extra gum and a $500 cash ticket. Ron once again finds Extra gum and a $1000 cash ticket. Laura finds Extra gum and $5000 cash ticket. Everyone else is eating and eating and eating. Kristin is smart enough to stop eating. She doesn’t feel the Golden Ticket is that important. Filipe finds $500 cash ticket. Finally, Laura gets the Golden Ticket. You can see the fear on everyone else’s face, except for Tara of course. After all is said and done, the group ate more than 18,000 calories combined. That’s a lot of calories!

Laura starts planning and tells Tara she should fall below the yellow line. This way Laura votes off the other contestant and no one will be surprised. Tara isn’t sure this is the way to go. She doesn’t like the idea of NOT losing weight on purpose. I don’t blame her. This definitely could backfire on her.

When the contestants tell Bob and Jillian about how many calories they ate, they were in shock and extremely disappointed. The next shocker was when the contestants told Bob and Jillian what the vote was at the elimination. Bob now understands why everyone kept eating at the challenge. The contestants’ bodies show them what happens when you eat “crap”. They are lethargic and feel lousy. Bob and Jillian work them out until they regret eating one extra calorie.

Jillian takes her group to Subway. Jerry and Coleen from season six are there. They give tips on how to order. Don’t order mayo or oil, mustard and vinegar are okay. At least at Subway, you have some control about how many calories you consume.

Today’s challenge is at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. Guys will play against gals. They will race each other up and down the stadium stairs–all 2,156 of them! Today’s winner will win a two week trip for 4 at Fitness Ranch and Spa in Saint George, Utah. Tara and Sione are ahead of the packs and face off for the win. Sione wants to beat Tara. She’s beat him time and time again in competitons. They are going head to head, but then Sione makes a mistake and has to go back. This gives Tara the lead. Sione is really pushing to catch up to her. Tara has her flag first and once again she beats Sione. She’s unbeatable .

Fast forward through the last chance workouts to the weigh-ins. Laura has sole control of who is eliminated as long as she doesn’t fall below the yellow line. Mike is up first. He has a chance to break the record for the most pounds lost on campus. He loses 5 pounds. Not enough to break the record. This is the smallest amount he’s ever lost on the show. He’s not happy but I think he’s being too hard on himself. Ron is next with a 9 pound weight loss. He’s thrilled but he doesn’t like that he’s above his son on the percentage chart. Tara is next. Everyone is wondering if she is going to throw the weigh-in. She loses 3 pounds. Laura turns to Jillian and tells her she didn’t do it on purpose. But everyone thinks she did. Kristin lost 6 pounds. Helen lost 2 pounds. The temptation challenge is taking its toll on the contestants. This puts her and Tara in danger of being below the yellow line. Filipe lost 7 pounds. This keeps him safe. Sione only lost 4 pounds and this puts him below the yellow line. Laura is last to weigh-in. She loses 8 pounds and is safe but now she needs to choose who goes home…Helen or Sione. They are both her friends and she’s upset at having to choose. Will this Golden Ticket end up being her downfall?

Only Helen, Sione and Laura go to the elimination room. Laura says that the Golden Ticket ended up being a burden rather than a good thing. Laura says she made the decision not on game play but on what is best for her. She says that Helen has been there for her since the beginning and she needs her to remain, so she votes off Sione. I know this probably makes a bunch of you happy but I liked Sione more than I like Helen. Helen doesn’t seem as serious about life changes as Sione is. He’s done really well with his weight loss though–so I’m not worried about him. His reunion with his family was uplifting. He really looks amazing. Sione decides to change careers and become a fitness trainer. Good for him!

Next week’s Biggest Loser is the makeover show. This is always a fun one. I won’t be around though. I’m taking my son to visit colleges. So taking my place is BBBlogger from our sister site Big Brother Blog. See you in a week. Have a Happy Easter. Bloggergal1

Biggest Loser’s Power Goes to One Contestant

April 6, 2009 · Filed Under Episode Recaps, Vicky Vilcan, Weight Loss Tips · Comment

Hi,
On this week’s Biggest Loser one player will have the sole elimination vote! A temptation challenge is held to decide who will have that sole vote. I’m not sure if I would want to be the one with that vote. It probably won’t make you too popular.

Rocco (chef/cutie) is back this week to teach the contestants how to make healthy restaurant-style meals. Always fun to watch Rocco cook, isn’t it?

The challenge involves stadium steps. Sorry…I don’t have anything more than that!

See you tomorrow night! Bloggergal1

Biggest Loser Gives a Contestant a Second Chance

April 1, 2009 · Filed Under Episode Recaps · 12 Comments

Hi Everyone,

The show starts with former Biggest Loser winner Allie Vincent meeting the contestants in the gym. Allison had a baby girl and Allie is filling in for her. She announces that one of the eliminated contestants will return to the ranch today. Nicole, Estella and David will weigh-in and the one who has the highest weight loss percentage will get a second chance on Biggest Loser. Also that player will have immunity at the weigh-in this week. If you remember, this is how Allie won the game. She was given a second chance and then returned and won it all. Why these three? They were the three that were eliminated while still with their partner to allow their partner to remain on the ranch.

Estella is first on the scale. She has lost a total of 45 pounds, 18.6%. David lost a total of 46 pounds, 11.7%. Nicole lost 87 pounds, 32.34%. Nicole is back in the game and the other contestants are shaking in their boots! She has the second highest percentage weight loss of all the contestants. Only Tara has a higher percentage. Look out…here comes Nicole!

Bob is excited to see Nicole come back. Tara is freaking out and talks one-on-one with Jillian. Jillian tries to calm her down. Tara tells Jillian that she can’t figure out why she gained the weight in the first place.

Ron is walking when he breaks out into a cold sweat and chest pains. The show immediately sends him to the hospital. He wasn’t having a heart attack but he is having blood loss. The doctor sends him for a procedure to put a tube down his esophagus to figure out why he’s bleeding (double balloon enteroscopy). Turns out he’s going to be fine. He needs to take medicine for a recurring ulcer due to a complication from his previous gastric bypass surgery.

Challenge time! Michelle, last season’s Biggest Loser will host this challenge. Each of the contestants will be on a platform 6 feet above a pool. The platform is held up by ropes. One by one the ropes will be released making it harder and harder to balance. Last one standing wins a one pound advantage at the weigh-in. If Nicole wins, since she has immunity, will get to give one pound to the player of her choice. Challenges like this make me aware of why I could never compete on one of these reality shows!

First to drop into the water is Mike, followed quickly by Filipe. Laura is the third person eliminated. Tara falls in next. Did she throw it? Who knows. Helen is eliminated next. Three competitors remain…Nicole, Kristin and Sione. Nicole is next to fall. Sione and Nicole are going head to head. Sione’s face is serious. He wants this bad. Kristin has great balance–she is hardly wobbling. But unfortunately, she loses her balance first. Sione wins the challenge.

Fast forward through the last chance workouts to the weigh-ins. Allison is back. Nicole is first up on the scale but she has immunity. She gained 5 pounds this week. Everyone is in total shock. It’s things like this that make “dieters” want to give up. I guess the rule is if she gains weight, she doesn’t keep immunity. She is below the yellow line. Kristin is next. She lost 4 pounds this week. Laura lost…oops gained 1 pound. What is going on? Tara needs to lose 1 pounds to break the 100 pound mark. She lost 6 pounds this week! She has officially become the second woman to lose more than 100 pounds on campus. Helen lost 6 pounds this week. She takes a huge breath of relief. Sione lost 6 pounds this week, plus a 1 pound advantage. Filipe lost 4 pounds and this keeps him safe from elimination. Mike lost 11 pounds this week. Ron is last to weigh-in. He was in the hospital part of the week. As long as he doesn’t gain weight, he is safe from elimination. Unfortunately, he gained 3 pounds. Not surprising since they gave him fluids at the hospital. Now it’s between Ron and Nicole to be eliminated.

To me this is a no-brainer. Keeping Nicole over Ron would be game suicide. She’s too tough of a competitor to keep around. The only reason to maybe choose Ron would be his total support of his son Mike. Mike of course votes to send Nicole home. Filipe votes to send Ron home. Mike and Ron feel he betrayed them. Laura votes to send Nicole home. Sione votes against Ron. Since Sione and Filipe are cousins, this doesn’t come as a surprise. Tara, feeling threatened by Nicole, votes to eliminate her. Helen votes to send Ron home. This makes 3 votes each. Kristin is the deciding vote. She votes to send Nicole home. Her second chance has ended quickly and I’m sure Tara and Mike are breathing a huge sigh of relief.

Have a great week…Bloggergal1
