Every team member for themselves!

October 15, 2008 · Filed Under Episode Recaps · 2 Comments

Hi Everyone!

This week’s show started with a temptation.  After this temptation, the competitors will be divided into two teams–blue and black.  The winner of the temptation gets control and chooses the teams.  The room was set up with a number of goodies.  The winner of the temptation would be the one who eats the most calories.  Heba tried to take control immediately by volunteering to eat a donut.  She “said” she wanted to keep the teams the same.  But not everyone trusted her.  Philip wanted control so he ate two peanut butter cups.  Amy and Shellay weren’t agreeing with Heba either, so Amy ate a brownie.  But Heba ate two donuts.  The donuts had the most calories so Heba won the temptation.

Heba divided the teams up as follows:  Black Team:  Renee, Coleen, Michelle, Philip, and Shellay.   Blue Team:  Vicky, Amy P., Heba, Amy C. and Brady.  What this amounted to was her dividing up the family teams of Philip and Amy and Shellay and Amy.  She says this was strategic but I think it was personal.  She wanted to get rid of Philip from her team.  We’ll see how this plays out for her in the future!

After the trainers met their “new” teams, Michelle and Jillian had a heart to heart.  Personally, I think they should get a psychologist on the show.  What makes Jillian an expert on relationships, etc.?  But anyway, Michelle went through the whole guilt thing blah, blah, blah.  Am I the only one that thinks Michelle needs to grow up and get over it?  She’s 26 years old–time to tell Mommy and Daddy what she thinks and feels and live her OWN life!

On to tonight’s competition.  As promised, this was the Biggest Loser’s longest challenge.  The challenge is to walk up and down a hill taking pictures at each end.  The kicker of this is that they need to do this for 14 hours!  You get a point every time a member of your team takes a picture.  If all the members of the team are in the same picture, the team receives an extra point.  The Blue Team was behind the eight ball because they have Amy P. and she has bad knees.  So they decided instead of having all their members walk together that they would send Brady on his own so he could (hopefully) get extra trips and extra points.

So it was hot and they were tired and they all get together and decide to take a break.  I can’t believe they all went to bed!  Shellay and Coleen got jittery and were lying around wondering if the other team was out on the hill.  Well, this was much ado about nothing because they just sat there and then everyone went back on the hill together.  Me?  I would have been out on the hill!  I have to admit they sure don’t seem to care about winning this game.  They do know its a game, don’t they?  The winner of the competition was the black team.  This gave them a two pound advantage in the weigh in.

The next part is what has become a weekly thing–the Biggest Loser commercial.  Bob’s team is all sitting around eating 10 calorie Jello cups.  Bob sends for Cool Whip and tells the group how they can add the Cool Whip with only an additional 20 calories.  Now run out and buy yourself some Jello and Cool Whip!

At the weigh in, Alison asks Michelle if she wants to stay in the game.  Of course, she stays (ho-hum).  The weight loss totals:  Michelle lost 7 pounds.  Renee lost 5 pounds.  Phil lost 8 pounds.  Coleen lost 5 pounds.  Shellay lost 5 pounds.  This gave the black team a total of 30 pounds plus the 2 pound advantage for a total of 32 pounds.  Amy C. lost 9 pounds.  Vicky lost 6 pounds.  Brady lost 6 pounds.  Amy P. lost 6 pounds.  Heba lost 8 pounds giving the Blue Team the win.

The Black Team had to pick someone to go home.  I thought it was perfectly obvious that their selection would be Shellay.  She’s the weakest link!  Oh wait…that’s a different show?  Shellay does get eliminated and the video of her after her weight loss was great.  She really looks awesome!

I have to admit, I think two hours is too long to watch the show.  There seems to be a million commercials and the same things are said over and over and over.  If they cut out the repetition, they can easily fit the show into an hour.  There isn’t enough happening and frankly, I’m bored out of my mind!  So what do you think?

Have a great week!   Love Bloggergal1 Read more

Wednesday’s show – A tearful weigh-in

October 9, 2008 · Filed Under Episode Recaps · Comment

Hi Everyone!

Wednesday’s show focus was way more positive.  Amy went back to the gym making Jillian proud of her.  Michelle talked with Jillian about her relationship with her mom.  Everyone worked their tails off in the last chance workout.

Bob took his team to Subway.  He parked way far from the entrance–an easy, sneaky way to get in a short walk.  I use this method a lot, but always make sure it doesn’t compromise your safety!  He explained how to check the fat and calorie content of the subs.  Bob didn’t mention this but one thing I do when I go to Subway is never using any kind of dressing.  This gives you a little extra calorie savings.

On to the weigh-ins.  Once again, only one couple will fall below the yellow line and they will need to pick who goes and who stays.  Colleen lost three pounds.  Michelle and Renee lost nine pounds.  Amy and Shellay lost nine pounds.  Phil and Amy lost eight pounds.  Heba and Ed lost eight pounds, but actually Heba lost eight pounds and Ed lost nothing!  Brady and Vicky lost a whopping twelve pounds!  This put Heba and Ed below the yellow line.  A tough decision awaited them.  They decided to send Ed home–lots more crying!

I think its interesting that Ed didn’t lose any weight this week.  It shows how every person is different and loses at different speeds.  Its so important to make sure your diet and exercise goals focus on you specifically.  Not losing is really tough and overcoming a week like that is really, really hard.  Of course, we see at the end of the show that Ed was more than able to lose the weight at home.  He looks awesome!

Take care everyone!  Have a happy, healthy week…love bloggergal1

Biggest Loser Tuesday A Whole Lotta Not Much?

October 8, 2008 · Filed Under Episode Recaps · Comment

Hi Everyone!

We’re back from our 30th anniversary jaunt.  San Diego is such a beautiful place.  Neil Diamond was amazing.  Now there’s inspiration to stay healthy and in shape!

I just finished watching Tuesday’s Biggest Loser show.  The first words that come to mind are tear-jerky and annoying.  The show started with Amy and Philip going home for 24 hours.  They spent time hiking with their children and hugging and crying.  Crying happens a lot on the Biggest Loser doesn’t it?  While Amy & Philip were home, Shellay and Amy spent 24 hours with their trainer, Jillian.  What were they thinking?  She definitely belongs on a Marine Base.  I know I could never be on the Biggest Loser because I DO NOT like being yelled at.  It’s why I could never play a sport or join a military unit.  You yell at me, I shut down–plain and simple!  Meanwhile back at the ranch the rest of the couples (and Coleen) were business as usual.

The challenge this week involved hanging from a chain/bar while balancing on another.  It started out easy because they were doing it in a tank full of water, but then slowly but surely the water started draining and hanging on got harder and harder.  The end was a showdown between Amy and Vicky.  The prize was a package from home along with a family VIP vacation at Universal Studios.  Both of the women wanted it bad, but Vicky won.  That mother fighting for something for her “youngin” kicked in!  Vicky was able to pick another couple to get the package from home and she picked Amy so all’s well that ends well, ya know?

The next part of the show was a Jillian screaming fest.  I’ll be honest–I fast forwarded.  I just can’t stand to listen to her scream and threaten the contestants.  Other than a little time that Bob spent talking with Vicky about her exercise routines (she has bad knees) and then Vicky in turn talking to her hubby about having to work out more than him–nothing else to report.

So is that all this season is going to hold?  Crying and yelling and not much else?  What about more nutrition guidance?  What about ways to exercise that aren’t just pain sessions?  What about some real compassion from the coaches?  Is it me, or does Jillian always look like she’s BS’n when she finally makes a “breakthrough”?

So since this is a two show week, we get to see who lost what and falls below the yellow line tonight at 9:00 p.m.  Again, there will be only one couple below the yellow line and they will have to choose which one of them will leave and which one of them will stay.  I have to admit, I’m still rooting for Coleen–especially since she’s all alone now.  How about the rest of you?  Stay tuned…love Bloggergal1

Episode 3 calls for a road trip!

October 1, 2008 · Filed Under Episode Recaps · Comment

Hi Everyone!

Welcome to week three of the Biggest Losers: Families.  This week the couples are on a road trip to the Grand Canyon.  But before arriving there, they must face their first temptation.  The temptation involved the couples guessing the number of calories in various foods.  The couple who guessed the closest number of calories without going over would receive a box of Xtra Fruit Sensations gum.  The first couple to get three boxes of gum wins a camper for their trip while all the other couples will camp the “old fashioned” way.  The twist to this is that any couple who competes but doesn’t guess correctly must eat the food.  Heba and Ed win when the other contestants chicken out and stop competing.  This competition just seemed like a huge Xtra gum commercial to me!

The Grand Canyon is amazing isn’t it?  I heard one of the contestants say that it was on her “life list” and I have to agree that it’s on mine too.  Hopefully I will get there!  Before their challenge, the couples were left on their own at the campsite.  They were given some equipment…medicine balls, etc., but no one seemed to know what to do with it.  Some walked and most lazed out.  Not a good way to lose weight!

The competition took place in the river of the Grand Canyon.  One of each couple had to paddle a kayak tied to a pier as far out as they could go.  Then the others would try to pull them back to the dock.  The last one to reach the dock wins an RV.  Before the competition started, my husband predicted that the female couples didn’t stand a chance.  Only one couple, Ed and Heba decided that they would send the male out.  Ed had no problem rowing and staying away from the dock the longest.  Will winning two competitions in a row put a great big bullseye on their back?  You betcha!

So as I’m watching the show, one of the couples are cooking and talking and I look behind them and for the first time notice the kitchen cabinets.  Did you notice them?  They’re white with this big gold design stamped in the middle–very 60′s.  My husband said they matched the drapes.  Huh?  The outside of the ranch isamazing looking.  Where on earth did this kitchen come from?  Sorry…I lost my train of thought!

New twist!  No vote this week.  There will be only one couple that falls below the yellow line and of that one couple only one person will go home.  It will be up to the couple to pick who goes.  I’m not sure where this will lead in future weeks when that person is alone and everyone else is in couples, but I guess we shall see.

On to the weigh ins:  Phil & Amy lost 15 pounds.  Brady & Vicky lost 8 pounds.  Michelle & Renee lost 9 pounds.  Ed & Heba lost 16 pounds.  Amy & Shellay lost 9 pounds.  Jerry & Coleen lost 5 pounds.  Jerry actually gained 2 pounds while Coleen lost 7.  This gave the lowest percentage of weight loss to Jerry and Coleen.  Since Jerry is injured who would leave is a no-brainer.  In fact, the whole “twist” thing just seems like a really big ruse to get Jerry out of there.

Seeing how Jerry continued to lose weight after leaving the ranch was uplifting.  I’ve been rooting for him since the very beginning–that underdog thing, ya’ know?  Since Jerry and Coleen were my favorite couple I guess I’ll have to pick a new one!

Have a great remainder of the week, love Bloggergal1

Week Three Warm Up

September 28, 2008 · Filed Under Episode Recaps, The Biggest Loser · Comment

Hi Everyone!

It’s week number 3 of The Biggest Losers: Families.  I wonder what’s in store for the contestants?  The tiny weight loss amounts from week two have to be eating (get it?) at them!  I suppose the contestants can go either way…get fed up and do worse or dig down deep and work harder to improve their percentages in week number three.

Our poll hasn’t had much participation (and WHY NOT????)  but so far the favorite couple is Coleen and Jerry.  There’s something about Jerry that makes you cheer for him– a genuine “good guy” quality.  Coleen’s determination in the competitions, while having to compete by herself also improves their popularity.  It’s great to see a daughter support her dad that way.

This show is so different from all the other reality competitions because everyone is heading towards a great goal.  How can you dislike any of these people?  I’m cheering for all of them!

Well, here’s hoping you all have a great start to the new week!  I’ll be back on Tuesday evening with your recap.  Please join me!  Also, comment and let me know why you are watching and what you think about the show so far–PLEASE??

The dreaded week two!

September 24, 2008 · Filed Under Episode Recaps · Comment

Hello Everyone!

Before we begin, I’ve gathered some info that I thought you’d find interesting.  According to Brand Week.com The Biggest Loser: Families premiere show drew more than 8.2 million viewers last week!  In conjunction with its popularity, NBC will be expanding its merchandising for the show.  Look for kitchen appliances (like blenders, scales, etc.), a Wii game and exercise equipment all sporting the Biggest Loser name.  Also planned is a mobile Internet application that will let users get workout tips at the gym, recipes at the market and calorie info at restaurants from their cell phones, via a partnership with publishing house Rodale.  It seems that Biggest Loser is a big winner for NBC and its sponsors!

This week’s show started out with an auction.  The couples bid on the percentage of weight loss that they felt they could lose.  Weight loss during the second week of the show typically averages about two percent.  The couple that won the auction must reach the percentage they bid or end up automatically below the yellow line.  If they do reach their percentage they win $10,000.  Winners of the auction were Coleen and Jerry with a percentage of 2.4.  They must lose a total of 14 pounds to win the money.  Jillian was pretty upset when she heard that they had won this.  She knew that it put them at a disadvantage because even loosing 10 pounds wouldn’t be enough.  Even though she’s right, I totally disagree with her negativity.  Wouldn’t it have been better for Coleen and Jerry if she said that this was a tough goal but if they work really, really hard that they can do it?  What good did it do to tell them they were crazy to take such a chance?

Next was a contest to win a phone call to home.  It involved sliding down a waterslide and then hiking back up a hill in a certain length of time.  The couples continued until there was only one couple left.  Winners were the Orange Team: Ed and Heba.  They were then able to pick another couple to call home.  They chose Amy and Philip because of them having little children including an autistic son.  Of course I cried like a baby watching them talk to their families.

The cooking segment with Rocco DiSpirito was awesome!  He taught one member of each team to make a healthy recipe that was also economical.  When he took them to the grocery store, he gave information on how to choose various produce that will be really helpful to me.  I never knew how to choose a mango until now!  I’ll definitely try his recipes.

Okay, weigh in time!  Brady & Vicky lost 11 pounds, Amy & Shellay lost 6 pounds, Renee & Michelle lost 7 pounds, Amy & Phil lost 12 pounds, Ed & Heba lost 11 pounds, L.T. & Tom lost 0 pounds (L.T. actually gained 3 pounds!), Coleen & Jerry lost 11 pounds.  This put Coleen/Jerry and L.T./Tom in the bottom two.  The family that was sent home was L.T. and Tom.  I can’t say it enough times how much I hate the elimination.  I would rather see all the teams compete to the very end and who loses the biggest percentage of weight wins…period!  But, oh well, not my call, huh?  At least they still have a chance to win something!

Well, I lost 2 1/2 pounds this week!  Yes, I did stop eating fruit and that did seem to kick the weight loss into gear.  So, what about the rest of you?  Are you trying to lose weight?  Are you trying to get fit?  Are you out there?  Helloooooo????  Please take a moment to click on Comment link and leave me a shout out.  The comment link is on the same line with the date.  Also, don’t forget to participate in our poll…Which team is your favorite so far?

Have a great healthy week…love Bloggergal1

Check out Rocco this week!

September 21, 2008 · Filed Under Episode Recaps, The Biggest Loser · 2 Comments

Hi Everyone!

I’m looking forward to Tuesday’s Biggest Loser: Families because that cutie pie Rocco is cookin’ (in more ways than one!).  I need all the help I can get in finding and preparing foods that are low in calories and fat.   Of course, I also want my recipes to taste good!  Also important to me is that the recipe’s ingredients are simple and available where I shop.  With gas prices up, I don’t want to be driving all over town to find what I need to cook dinner.  This is a little easier to accomplish now that I live in sunny southern California.  There are great grocery stores everywhere you look.  However, the prices at these grocery stores are another story!

So on a personal note, I did not have a great week in the “losing” department.  I thought I had cut back on my eating. I know I’m walking and walking and walking.  With a nine month old Labrador/Border Collie mix, you really have NO choice but to walk!  I don’t feel like I’m losing much weight though.  I’m still having a hard time buttoning my shorts!  Actually, I weigh myself on Monday so we’ll see…  One thing I am going to do different this week is to limit my fruits to apples only.  I know fruit is supposed to be good for you, but it never fails that when I eat a lot of fruits (the RDA), I gain weight.  I read that melons are like 90% water, but I guess the 10% left is sugar and its right here on my hips!  I’ll keep you posted!

Check out our brand new poll…Which team is your favorite so far?  Don’t forget to watch Biggest Loser on Tuesday night at 8:00 p.m. on NBC.  We’ll dish about the show on Wednesday, so I’ll see you then.  Have a healthy, happy week!

And so it begins…

September 17, 2008 · Filed Under Episode Recaps, The Biggest Loser · 3 Comments

Welcome Everyone!

I’m so excited to be here! The Biggest Loser, with its focus on families, promises to be inspirational and provide us all with a chance to improve our own selves!  Hopefully The-Biggest-Loser-Blog will become a place for you to hang out, a place to come to get support and especially a place to talk and comment about this week’s show.

Let’s start by getting to know each other.  I work with BBBlogger on his Big Brother sites.  When he asked if I was interested in posting on the Biggest Loser blog, I was excited.  The women in my family have always struggled with their weight.  My mom was over 200 pounds and I can remember her trying diet after diet with no success.  Both my sisters are currently on the Weight Watcher program.  I am lucky that I don’t have as much of a problem with weight as my sisters and mom, but I am currently about 25 pounds overweight.  I am constantly aware of my weight and always worry that I will keep gaining and gaining.   So I’m working on eating (and cooking) healthier and also incorporating exercise into my daily life.  No, it’s not easy but like the contestants on The Biggest Loser I realize how important it is to make these life changes.  I thought this blog would be a great opportunity to work toward these goals.  So please take a moment and comment to let us know all about you and why you love (or hate?) The Biggest Loser.  Feel free to write out your goals and hopefully we can all help each other!

As I’m sure you know, tonight was the first show in The Biggest Loser: Families series.  Each couple seems so special and so determined.  I think the couple that stands out for me is father and daughter team Jerry and Coleen.  I loved seeing Coleen play for the both of them and trot on up that hill (mountain?)!  I always seem to root for the underdog so I guess knowing how far Jerry has to go to get to where he needs to be makes me want to see him and Coleen succeed.

It will be interesting to see how the stress affects each team.  Supporting your family member is important to the game, but these people have to go home and continue “being family”.  I don’t know if I would go into this kind of situation with my DH!

Now, on to tonight’s show summary.  The teams had a competition where they had to climb a mountain (hill?) to pick up a sign to win that prize.  The most coveted prize was “Immunity” .  Jerry couldn’t compete because his health wouldn’t allow it so Coleen had to compete alone.  This made her more determined to get to the top first and she did insuring Immunity for her and her father.  Last to make it up were Vicky and Brady resulting in them receiving a 2 pound penalty at the weigh in.

Weigh in:   Coleen and Jerry lost 27 pounds.  Heba and Ed lost 29 pounds.  Michelle and Renee lost 31 pounds.  L.T. and Tom lost 42 pounds.  Amy and Bill lost 39 pounds.  Stacey and Adam lost 28 pounds.  Shellay and Amy lost 29 pounds.  Vicky and Brady lost 47 pounds.  Since the tallies are taken by the percentage of weight lost, the two couples with the lowest percentage of weight loss were Heba/Ed and Stacey/Adam.  When the votes were tallied, Stacey and Adam were voted off.

I have to say, I know its a big part of the competition but I always have a hard time with this.  I would like to see all the couples stay and have that opportunity to lose weight, get fit and change their lives.  It was good to see Stacey and Adam continuing to lose weight after leaving the show.

Well that’s it for tonight!  Please join me by commenting and saying hello.  The website will be evolving and we’ll be providing some fun opportunities for you to change your life…so stay tuned.  Love Bloggergal1
